Rogue 1 => Illusionist 3 => Rogue 1 => Illusionist 2(need 3rd level arcane spells, ban Evocation and either Necromancy, Abjuration, or Enchantment) => Rogue 1 (finally gets the +2d6 sneak attack and can round out skills)=> Arcane Trickster 10 gets you the needed skills and spells in the quickest fashion that is legal, I think.
I like taking the rogue level last before AT though, because it lets you round out the skills without cross classing a lot of ranks, and works from a character development standpoint too - seems to me naturally a character who starts by thieving, moves to spell slinging illusions for deception, and then comes back around to thieving before finding a way to combine them in arcane trickster.
As Rince said above, Greater Invisibility is your best friend, as is Dimension Door if you have to get the heck out of dodge quickly.

OK, here's another one to chew over. Two weapon fighting with a fighter using gauntlets and improved unarmed strike. The weapon focus/ specialization tree for gauntlets, regular not spiked, will offset low damage output a little bit and keep his 2 weapon fight bonus to hit the same as another non weapon focused character. The reason for gauntlets is 2 fold; first I can think of nothing that says they can't be enhanced as a magical weapon, second they are listed in weapons as an "unarmed" like regular unarmed damage which means you can power attack with them, benefiting from power attack with both hands. This feat set would be nicely augmented by stunning fist, which if successful, lowers the enemy AC making them further vulnerable to power attack. Unlike my power attacking monk, the metal fisted fighter has the attack bonus to back up power attack, and more attacks per round by level 11 if not sooner. This idea does require either a fairly dex and strength favored build to support 2 weapon fighting and still be able to hit well, or a lot of loot to convert into 2 high enhancement bonus gauntlets. The damage die is only a d3, but at level 4 it is d3 +str+2+power attack. For the multi classers out there, this character could become a Barbarian after level 12 and benefit from the extra hit and damage bonuses conferred by rage, or the character could have levels of barbarian and fighter interspersed to be player friendly and smooth in progression. I think humans are a natural choice for the free multi-classing, although it would be just the same as a half-orc (barb is free) or a dwarf (fighter free). The half-orc will hit more easily and do better damage without stretching the build too far (but will have the wit and social skills of a brick) while the dwarf would make for a hardier fist fighter. The other choice (odd though it may be) is the halfling. His boosted dex makes 2 weapon fighting easier + he has a size bonus to hit, which can be traded into power attack. He can't do the multi-class without penalty unless he goes for 10 and 10, which doesn't get the best of either world, but he is going to hit more often at the ultimate expense of 1 point of damage lost per hit (d3 goes down to d2).The hit to strength hurts, but this guy doesn't need intelligence much and has no practical use for charisma, so on a point buy, just burn the spare points on strength and leave those 2 stats at 8. He could also be a ranger/barbarian or a ranger/fighter using ranger to get the 2 weapon tree. Of course the only advantage is never being unarmed, never being disarmed and always being able to pick up whatever other over powered weapon you come across cause its useful. But if never worrying about a thief stealing your weapons in the tavern isn't your thing. . .

I like it with a ranger... dump DEX largely and go for high STR and CON, you get TWF from class features. A dwarf would be funny like this... I can see a bar room brawling dwarf in this RP.
