New characters to this campaign will be using a 32-point point buy system. This will start out with all abilities at 8 points, buying an ability up to 14 costs one point per stat increase (8 to 14 is 6 points), buying one from 14 to 15 or from 15 to 16 costs two points per stat point, and buying one from 16 to 17 or from 17 to 18 costs three points per stat point. So if you want an 18 in something, you will be paying 16 points- 6 to get it up to 14, 4 more to get it to 16, and 6 more to get it to 18.
This is done BEFORE any racial adjustments to the stats, so that 18 might become a 16 or a 20 in the end, depending.
Keep in mind that as we are starting above level one, characters also get one additional stat point per four levels, added in after everything else, including racial adjustments, have been calculated.
SPECIAL: In order to have point-buy generate the same scores that rolling dice do, you can also buy your base stats DOWN. How this works is that you can take a base stat from 8 down to 6 to gain ONE extra point for point buy, total. Or, you can take it all the way down to 3 to gain a total of TWO extra points for point buy. So if you want your scores to start at a base of 3,8,8,8,8,8 you will have 34 points to play with. If you want them to start at 3,3,3,8,8,8 you will have 36 points to play with.
You can do this for as many stats as you want, but you can NOT take a stat down to 3 in this method if you have a racial -2 to that stat- no scores of 1 are allowed. You can take a stat down to 6 if you get a -2 racially, that's fine, but not if you have a racial -4.
Any player with a character having a stat of six or less will be expected to roleplay this when appropriate. Any player with a character with a stat of 3 WILL roleplay this, as appropriate. Characters with stats of 3 will be given a quirk or flaw as appropriate by the DM to help explain their stat- for example, extraordinarily rank bodily odor, personality of a wet noodle, severely absent-minded, crippled from childhood illness, etc.
ROLLING ALTERNATIVE:
If you want to roll your stats instead of using point-buy, they will be rolled as 4d6 six times, drop the lowest die. This will be done with the DM's dice in front of the DM, no rerolls of ones. The player may pick which of the DM's d6 dice they want to roll for this. If the stats generated this way suck, too bad.
