Vikings were convinced that their destinies lay in the hands of their gods. When something went wrong, it was the god’s will. If you wanted a fruitful harvest, it was important to sacrifice to the god of vegetation, before sowing. The saying “as a man sows, so shall he reap“ could have its initial stages here. People wore amulets, a claw of a bear, an amber charm, anything for good luck. Your favorite god or goddess would help you, but only if you diligently worshipped and sacrificed.

~ The "Viking Prayer" ~
This was spoken in the film. "The 13th Warrior", and despite its lack of authenticity, it has become a favorite among the Heathen folk.
Lo, there do I see my father.
Lo, there do I see my mother,
and my sisters, and my brothers.
Lo, there do I see the line of my people,
Back to the beginning!
Lo, they do call to me.
They bid me take my place among them,
In the halls of Valhalla!
Where the brave may live forever!

Lo, there do I see my father.
Lo, there do I see my mother, my sisters and my brothers.
Lo there do I see the line of my people back to the beginning.
Lo, they do call to me.
They bid me take my place in Asgard at the halls of Valhalla,
Where spirits of the Tru' may live forever.
Lo, here do I see my son.
Lo, here do I see my daughter, their daughters and sons.
Lo, here do I see the line of my people forward to the mists of tomorrow.
Lo, they do call to me.
They bid me take my place in Midgard at the hearth of our folk.
Where the memories and spirits of the family will live forever.
