That last time you checked, you weren’t feeling sad. But someone walked past you, and suddenly you feel as though you’re about to cry. When this continues to happen, you might get a bit worried… but there’s no need. There is a reason for what you are feeling.
Empathy is the name given to the ability to sense the emotions of other people. Everything in this universe is comprised of, and gives off, energy. This includes emotions, which “float about” within the energy that is you, and spread to your aura. An empath can “read” these energies, and is able to interpret them.
Being empathic can be very useful, but there are drawbacks, namely the draining effect of being stuck in someone else’s head. If an empath is so sensitive to the emotions around them that they cannot disengage from it all, they risk draining their energies, which in turn leaves them vulnerable to illness and mental health problems.
To cope with all this stress, it is vital that empaths learn centering, grounding and shielding.
Centering
Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Go inside yourself, and look for the place within you that feels the most solid, the calmest place in your body. This is your center. For most people, this center is around the region of the heart chakra, but it can vary, so don’t be worried if you find your center in another part of your body. When you find it, you will just know due to a feeling of calm that washes over you after just a few minutes of focusing on the spot.
Grounding and Shielding
Once you have found your center, you need to ground. This is the process of connecting to the earth, dispersing excess energy.
Straighten your spine, breathe deeply and naturally. Visualise a long stream of energy emerging from your tailbone and sinking deep into a hole in the earth. Imagine this is your root, your anchor, holding you safely, and providing you with a "holding tank" for the negative energy.
Now you can start to free yourself from excess energy. Push negative energies, unwanted energies and the energies you have absorbed through your body into your 'anchor.' Send them down the energy stream, into the earth.
As the unwanted energy leaves your body, you may start to feel 'lighter', as though an unseen weight has been taken away. You might feel a sense of 'connection', and a peaceful feeling is likely to wash over you.
When all the energy has gone, draw your anchor back into your body, picture a seal going over the hole in the earth, locking the energy away from you. Practice finding this spot until you can do it anywhere, at any time.
