I was reading a lot of Knights of the Dinner Table and some stuff about Hackmaster and was wondering if you guys would like critical hits to be more interesting, much the same way the critical misses are. This isn't something I'd do for every critical hit, just the ones where you get a 20 on the first roll, and possibly a 20 on the 2nd as well, depending on what you think.
Ideally I'd buy a copy of Hackmaster and use their critical chart, but without spending more money on a new game system I was just going to make the results appropriate to the person's weaponery. For example, it wouldn't make much sense for their warhammer to take your hand off, usually.
Ah well, let me know if you want your (and the monster's) crits to have more of an impact. Thanks!

In my opinion since D&D already uses a generic damage model I don't like the idea of having a "focused" critical hit model. Having said that I it would come up so rarely that it would make little difference in the long run.

I've been using a critical and fumble table since 2e and my players have always loved the extra flavor it adds to the game. The D&D model of just doing more damage bores me and more experienced players and DMs I've played with. It brings great joy to the player when he is told that his strike severed a limb or he struck a friend due to a fumble. Much better than "You did 80 damage" or "You fumbled so your turn is over" B O R I N G!
I suppose it all depends on what the DM and the players want. It's nice to have a DM that offers that sort of game play detail to his game.

It is another thing altogether though when the DM has to tell a player that his/her right hand was just cut off and the party has no way to repair the damage.

lol, yeah terrible isn't it. That happened to the fighter in my group and let me tell you it was awesome from the standpoint of an "Oh crap!" moment. They had to think fast on their feet and figure out a way to save themselves and the fighter. There was some great role playing for many sessions just because of that one event.

I think a de-limbing system would be interesting but at the same time a little hazardous. It would make a nice alternative to the double 20 insta-kill, but I think a fortitude save should be in order too, or reflex. I was also thinking that the massive damage issue should involve amputation rather than death as well. I don't know.

I use a modified System Shock from 2e. Taking mass amount of damage at once or tons of small damage has got to have some effect on you. That's why I use a save check and an Impairment penalty on such traumatic events.
