<the large 6'4" tall viking warrior stands on the shores of theis new world he and his brave sailors have discovered. his shoulder length blond hair blows in the wind while his dark sea blue eyes scan the new lands before him. he hefts his mighty warhammer resting it upon a shoulder and walks into adventure...> hey guys come up with a challenging (but realistically winable scenario) for the mighty barbarian and I'll whip up an MH style solution ;D

Lystus the Adept new that in his heart of hearts he was never going to make the grade, learning higher level magics was hard. He had lost count at how many times he failed to produce flame let alone the fireball spell he had been studying. His teacher said "Master Lystus, if you must dally about with fire go to the coast where you can set fire to whatever you wish, im getting rather nervous of you around my library!" Lystus obviously saw sense as Arinador was a good teacher althouigh he was more inclined to teach about the preservation of magics and the good that can be done but, as all young mages, he wanted to smeg bullies with bolts of lightning and cremate his ex girlfriends new minstrel boyfriend - just the thought of the embarrassment suffered, caused him to pick up his bag of components and head out to the coast for the day. After 2 hours ride he smelt the fresh sea air, the ride had been draining for he struggled to keep on the saddle. Lystus found a small rock he perched himself on, took out some sandwiches and then started to study the magics. After several hours of reading he finally deciphered the last rune only to look up and see a sail on the horizon from the North... Traders? Must be... Lost probably he grinned to himself and carried on reading. oi was bellowed OI again... Lystus interrupted put the book down to see that the ship must of caught the wind and grounded on the shallow waters. In the distance was a giant of a man, cupping his hands shouting some dialect unfamiliar to the region but understood the international gesture for getting someones attention! Curious, Lystus packed his bag and walked a couple of yards towards the approaching gentleman... Then the realisation that this was no gentleman trader but a warrior from the frozen lands dookey!!! Lystus scrambled in his bag to find some bat dung and turned to run and find his horse. Lystus knew he couldnt out run these atheletes so decided to turn at the rock and face the approaching party... STAND BACK OR I SHALL FIRE, NORSEMEN Lystus shouted gripping the bat turd in his hand till it oozed between his fingers. Lystus' adrenaline was pumping, he wanted to test the fireball so recently discovered but didnt really want to test the invaders patience! Lystus frozen to the spot, hoping that something/someone intervened on his behalf thus relinquishing his decision on what to do next...

MH and his men tentatively approached the obviously frightened young man. He studied the boy before him his shrewd gaze noting the boy’s right hand shaking but poised in a strange manner. His middle finger and thumb were pinched together holding something between them while his index and pinky were stretched out pointing at the Viking band. The boy was wearing a thin cotton robe of plain white. Without taking his gaze from the boy he addressed his crew from the corner of his mouth while maintaining his smile.
Easy lads, he’s a spell hurler, and a fledgling one by the lack of symbols and his young age. He looks a little nervous.
The barbarian slowly lowered his warhammer to the ground and held his arms open wide in a gesture of passive greeting. The boy smiled back meekly
Well they certainly are being nice. He thought to himself. If only I could understand th…
then he smiled suddenly and snapped his fingers having an idea. This sudden movement from a boy the crew believed to be a spell hurler could only have one reaction. The boy found himself the focus of many sharp pointy sword and axe blades. MH also had his warhammer back in his grasp in the blink of an eye ready for battle. All of the color drain from young Lystus’s face, he held his left hand up empty palm towards the warriors and then slowly put his component back in his pouch and then held up his right in the same manner. MH turned towards his men and said something in his strange northman’s tongue, his men sheathed their blades and lowered their axes. The young mage then placed his left pinky to his mouth while placing his thumb upon his earlobe.
[glow=red,2,300]Expectus Conprndum[/glow]
He whispered under his breath. Then he addresses his strange visitors.
Greetings noble warriors
He said and bowed his head in a sign of respect.
“Look at me boy!!” Their leader said crossly and the boy’s head snapped up to look at MH’s scowling face. “Never bow down to me or my men. We are no better than you and you are no better than us. We are equals.”
Lystus nodded in understanding.
“Of course, please forgive my lack of manners I did not realize. I have no knowledge of your ways or customs."
“Better” the barbarian said with a smile. “Well met Spell hurler.” He said holding out his arm.
The boy clasped it in friendship. “You may call me Lystus. By the term Spell hurler, does that mean that you recognized me as a mage?”
MH nodded. “I did and I am Mjolnir of the Aesir.” He then pointed to the boy’s left ear. “when you did that strange gesture and whispered, was that a charm you worked in order for us to understand one another?”
“Yes”-answered Lystus. “It was a minor spell however and has a limited time span which will expire in a few hours.”
MH looked thoughtful. “What else can you do with these magics of yours?”
The boy beamed with pride at the question, “Well I could demonstrate my newest spell. It creates a huge exploding ball of flame.”
MH frowned at that, “Would that be the spell you intended to cast earlier when we first met.”
The boy became nervous again confirming the barbarian’s suspicions. Lystus licked his suddenly dry lips.
“Y-yes, but that was before learned you true intentions. I only intended to use it to defend myself.”
MH nodded. “Very well then show us your fire charm.”
“OK, but I’ll need some room.”
MH and his men stood behind the young mage giving him room. Lystus retrieved the phosphorus and guano from his pouch poising his hand as before and he concentrated on firing a small ball of flame that would explode into a larger one. Then he thrust his right hand forward and shouted.
[glow=red,2,300]Eruptus Orbictis Ignitus!![/glow]
A small sphere of orange flame shot forward from his hand and sped towards the sea, the crew behind him oooed and ahhhed. MH came up behind the boy and gave him a hearty slap upon his back.
“Well Done.”
But the spell wasn’t complete and MH broke the young man’s concentration. The small ball of flame veered sharply to the left and slammed smack into the Northmen’s sailing vessel blossoming into a huge explosion that rocked the beach, incinerating the main mast and setting the rest of the ship ablaze. There was nothing to be done. The whole ship was a charred wreck in a matter of minutes. Lystus stood there pale as a ghost with growling northmen all around him.
Ooops
thar ya go ;D

Ahem Lystus tried to clear his throat out, but his mouth was refusing to to produce saliva, quickly forming a cotton mouth, not a particular good time he thought, considering EVERY spell he knew required the use of his vocal chords! Goigwibblydoophez Helpless!!! Absolutely helpless, I cant even speak!!! The Mage paused then tried again... Abarlgdiddleoo I better stop this now before they think im spellcasting again! With this realisation, Lystus inhaled a mighty breath and tugged on his collar... Did you like it? The mage asked meekly, trying desperately to stiffle the nervous laugh that was contorting his whole body. As he glanced up to the towering Barbarian he noticed a wave of confusion settling across the northmans brow, Lystus had stalled the Barbarian. Me, got no boat The Leader of the pack slowly, no, very slowly, rolled over his brain. Lystus, although not a master of ESP realised that this barbarian was weighing up his options, Lystus was wondering if any of them were him or was he just in the way? Mjolnirh, is that how you say it? Lets not be too hasty. Yeah, I burnt your beautifully crafted, incredably expensive, sailing vessel, probably sending its valuable cargo to the seabed, yeah, I know your now stranded on a land unfamiliar to yourself and I have interrupted all your plans forever, but it could have been much worse... consider if that fireball had detonated point blank range? We would all be like a bunch of Hog Roasts, well... I would probably look like a chicken skewer next to you guys but.... Well, who actually builds a ship that isnt fire resistant??? The mage was coming to terms with his life time of servitude or his soon to be brutal and savage murder, I will give them a taster of my magic missile before I go though, he thought defiantly. Before tha Barbarian answered, Lystus' attention was caught by movement in the nearby woods, he was immediately aware that someone/something had been watching the recent shenanigans... <...den den dern...>

Before tha Barbarian answered, Lystus' attention was caught by movement in the nearby woods, he was immediately aware that someone/something had been watching the recent shenanigans... *Bordering the sandy ground, sparse bushes and tall grasses led inland towards a denser forest. Leaning comfortably against one of the hardier trees, Marisa watched Lystus with amusement. She'd been assigned, by the Elder Mage, to keep an eye upon the young mage. Oh, she kept an eye upon him, most certainly, but it was not specified that she should assist him if need be. Of course she knew better, but wouldn't miss an opportunity to see the young upstart squirm a bit.* *The landing of the barbarians was of intense interest to her, as she unconsciously fingered the mithral cube that hung from a chain about her neck. The leader's warhammer was finely crafted, and he was not half bad looking either she thought, as a smirk touched upon her lips.* *Loosening the tie that held her throwing knife upon her belt, she eased herself off the tree's hard surface, and walked towards the borderline of forest and sand. She began humming a rather lyrical tune, and placed a bit of a high step to her walk.* "Hmm, hmm, la, hmm ta hmm. Oh, I say there Lystus, tis wondering if ye..........." *Stopping suddenly, placing a surprised look upon her face* "Dear oh dear oh me....Lystus, what have I told ye about picking up strangers?"(Note: forgive the poor start, I'm a bit rusty at this.)

<The Viking captain was at first, startled by the voice in his head, the boy was mentally babbling to him beacause he was frightened and with good reason. he was suprised yet again, plesantly this time by the arrival of the female. MH smiled at her.>
Greetings and well met
<but silently he added, only guessing that the boy's mind magic worked both ways.>
your in luck boy, my crew was about to find out what the natives of this land looked like on the inside. but your friend here can offer what is to you a life saving distraction. you need only offer her to them as a partial payment for the destruction of my boat, and promise to get another built for us, possibly an enchanted one.
<MH took careful note of his surroundings then for the girl snuck up rather easily, most likely because the destruction of the boat offered a perfect cover, but where there are two there might be more.>

*Nearby, in a tree top, Santiago Menoa Remeirez was sunning himself after a pleasant meal of wild rodent when his nap was interrupted by the distant boom of a fireball hitting the viking ship. Opening one eye lazily Santiago peered toward the ocean. Of course he had scented the barbarian brutes before they had even landed and even the young wizard. He was not concerned. Then the female arrived. What was once a nice calm place to nap had suddenly become very crowded and now the noise. Santiago was getting irritated. He continued to lean against the tree's trunk but he lifted the wide brim of his hat to get a better view and fingered his rapier as he settled himself better on the branch he had stretched out on. His tail flicked back and forth impatiently.* edit: LWW made me do it for spelling and grammar

MARISA?! The mage shouted ahem... Marisa, fancy seeing you around here... Lystus caught hot handed by Marisa causing mischief yet again, but a boat load of Barbarians... Lystus went pale, he didnt know what was worse, being split open into several pieces, by a horde of hell bent savages or having his blatant misuse of magic reported to Arinador, the elder mage.
He did notice that the leaders gaze had fallen upon the beautiful Marisa, a smirk came across his face, which was in turn wiped off just as quickly by the dart of the leaders eyes... Jeez this man misses nothing Well, the barbarian is in for a shock with this female! Hmmm.... Shock??? The mage slowly moved himself behind his female rescuer (cowardly I know!) and was recalling the spells he had advised that morning... Detect Magic, Jump, Light, Magic Missile, shocking grasp... SHOCKING GRASP!
The mage clenched his fist and flicked his forfinger three times whilst muttering...
[glow=red,2,300]Silvanus Electricanai[/glow]
The mages hand crackled and the charge was absorbed into his young hand, the smell of charged air was intense, the mage looked up as Marisa glanced around knowing the spell cast, the defender was mouthing something to him but he couldnt read her lips, but instead eyeballed the barbarian behind her.

*Muttering under her breath to Lystus* "What are you doing?!!" *while smiling at the barbarian leader, Marisa realized that Lystus was pushing them into a more serious confrontation. Suddenly she kicked back and upward with one foot, narrowly missing Lystus' groin area. Reflexively, the young mage reached down to protect his royal jewels, forgetting that one hand was empowered by his spell.* "Zznappt"
*Lystus' eyes nearly popped out of his head from the searing pain and he dropped down to his knees, whimpering* *The barbarian leader stepped backward, eyes wide with horror that a mear female would have the strength to fell a man with such a kick; not realizing, of course, that the electricity of the spell had actually done the deed.*
*Meanwhile, Lystus slowly crawled away and up towards the treeline, hoping to find a quiet place to recover from his injury and humiliation; all the while being watched by a furry creature with a rather long pointy stick.*

<Seeing this display of violence from the young woman, prompted the crew to assume a battle ready formation in the blink of an eye, those using shields winced at the boy's pain and reflexivly held their shields a little lower. The Barbarian Captian Lantir Djornsson narrowed his eyes at the girl.>
What are you playing at witch!!
<He eyed her warily watching her every move.>

(OOC- is this a freeform rpg or something else? I have noticed that actions are being placed on characters by others. Just wondering.)
*Santiago snickered at the mage's unfortunate fumble, and watched silently as the mage crawled toward him. After the young mage collapsed, gasping at the base of the tree, Santiago spoke. His voice was soft with a strange accent*
It seems, my young friend, dat you may be in need of assistance, yes? Perhaps I Santiago Menoa Remeirez can help..
*with a flick of the tail the strange creature leapt from the tree and with a florished bow, landed at the young mage's feet. The creature in question was only about 2 feet tall, he wore only a large hat with an equally large feather protruding from its top. A pair of glossy, black leather boots covered his calves and a leather belt held his rapier in place. Beyond that, his body was clothed only in fine orange fur. A feline face peered up at him, wiskers twitching.*
(modified my size, 2 feet is a little better I think.)

The barbarian captain eyed Marissa warily waiting for her to respond when the very ground beneath their feet began to tremble and shake. The entire beach shook with great force knocking everyone to his or her hands and knees. Then the sands by the water line erupted, sand and water went flying everywhere. There by the water was a gargantuan crab, the crab had been awoken from its centuries of slumber by the fledgling mage’s explosive fireball and was now angry and hungry. It clacked its enormous razor sharp claws menacingly and skittered forward. The crab itself was about twelve feet in height and twice that wide. The horrid claws on the thing must’ve weighed a ton each. The captain wasted no more time on the girl in the face of this new peril.
GRAPPLES AND AXES MEN!!!
He shouted the orders and his crew sprang into action like a well-oiled machine. Those with swords and other weapons without axe blades discarded them for either grappling irons with rope or hand axes at their belts. The captain looked forlornly at the gutted burnt wreck of his ship knowing that there were long pikes on board that would have helped to flip the beast over upon its back, but they’d have to make do with the grapples.
Grapples landward and axes seaward, hop to it lads I want to be feasting upon this beast by dark!!
The men with grapples rushed inland putting themselves between the crab and the tree line. Grapples twirled and then soared through the air over the back of the beast. The men then spun towards the trees putting the ropes upon their shoulders and ran. The ropes went taut as the grapples caught upon the lips of the creature’s chitinous armor lifting its side up and exposing the soft underbelly. The men with axes rushed in to take advantage of the creature’s weakness.
OOOOOOOOODDDDDDDDDIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cried the captain as he charged the beast meaning to crack its armor with the pick side of his warhammer. One of the axe wielders screamed as he was crushed in one of the claws and the other claw snapped one of the lines pulling it.

She was about to enter into the nuances of various magic users when she suddenly found herself falling to the ground.* *Deftly rolling sideways, leastwise the barbarian try to take advantage of the situation, but was surprised to hear him calling out orders to his men about getting him dinner by dark. Looking up, she was in time to see one of the crew lifted up in a gigantic claw, his body crushed, and frailing around like a limp rag doll.* *She could only stare at the seabeast until a rope whipped by her, snapping her out of the trance. Quickly moving to her feet, lifting up her hands, and shouting out the words* "Perturbo Lancea!!!" *a rippled wave of energy shot out at the crab's face, erupting one of its glutinous eyeballs, and raining muck upon the barbarians below.*
