I got the last Harry Potter book on Saturday. I'm 2/3 of the way through it. Anyone else pick it up?

Yup, I finished that one Saturday night. It's a hard one to read, at first you're wondering who's going to die, and after a bit you're wondering, OK, who the heck is going to SURVIVE?

Yea, got it Saturday morning at about 1am (stupid long line, even for pre-order). Finished it around 5pm Saturday (obviously did nothing but read Saturday).
I thought it was excellent. Without spoilers it is hardly possible to really discuss it, but it gets the "Dave 2-thumbs-way-up" rating.
Kinda sad to see it all end, but really glad she didn't pull a Robert Jordan, endless novel series stunt.
Happy reading!

I really feel like reading these books after hearing you guys talk so positively about them.
Ugh! I despise Robert Jordan.

Honestly, they are all pretty well written and entertaining. I wasn't as fond of the 4th book, the Goblet of Fire, but the 5-7th sure made up for it. I don't know if I found it cliche or what, just didn't sit well with me.
I started reading them because there was a big taboo at my wife's school and they asked her to remove them from her book shelves and she refused. I read the first (which just had come out then) and went to the discussion about it. I borrowed a line from Rage against the machine that struck a cord. "We don't burn the books, we just remove them" The administration didn't like that one too much. I guess muttering that we should all pile our Harry Potter books in the square and burn them to make them happy wasn't tactfull either! LOL
I think I was one of the few people there of adult age that actually read the book, so it was easy to blow holes in their arguments.

Just finished it. The ending was great. I don't think any fan could be disappointed with it.

har! That's funny that people wanted Harry Potter books removed. What was their reason for having them removed?

Aye, I liked the last book too. Quite sad, though, with the large death toll. I think a lot of people listen to what other ignorant people are saying rather than read something and form their own opinion. The spoof religion site Landover Baptist has about 3 Harry Potter articles right now, and I'd bet that a lot of people think they're absolutely serious. Main site: www.landoverbaptist.org/One of the funnier Potter articles www.landoverbaptist.org/news0707/potter.html*please note that this site is to religious viewpoints what the Daily Show is to news- don't take it too seriously when they tell you you're damned, etc.* I think it's important to note that although there is virtually no mention of any religion in the Potter books, most of the characters do decorate for and celebrate Christmas, even if just in the gift-giving sense. So there are many ways you can take the books. Heck, there's lots of magic in the Chronicles of Narnia and people don't seem so eager to burn that, wonder why.

Yeah...I mentioned that about CS Lewis, seeing as he was one of the most prominant Christian authors of the last century, people were inclined to stop arguing after that. They like my reference to the wizard of oz too. The mean old wicked witch bares alot of resemblance in that story to Voldemort's role in Harry Potter. Evil incarnant or something.
Thanks for the articles Rincewind, that is what fueled the debate in the beginning.

Oh, I forgot to mention a funny thing about the book.
Both Fabian and Antioch were refered to in the book as names of wizards. Thought that was really ironic. Forget who Fabian was exactly, but Antioch was one of the 3 Peverell Brothers.
I'll expect a royalty check any day for using my names :-) Don't worry, I won't be holding my breath.

Yes, don't spoil anything, I haven't read this last one yet. Lord of the rings has an aweful lot more magical and fantastic elements than Harry Potter, especially if you read the other material with it (silmarilion) and those books never make it onto the devil's shelf. I'd really like to know what the big deal is.

Perhaps because these books are directed to elementary aged school children while LORT was directed at high school kids. There is a lot of adult content in the HP books, life lessons, death and mature themes. Some people have a meager understanding of death, and fear their children learning about pain through books when they've never felt it in life. Any parents that haven't read the books may be protective of their children in their ignorance of the content.
However, in Canada, the book was only once talked about being banned from schools, but the basis is the books go against the bible's teachings. And since there is no prayer in school, they cannot uphold what they do not practice.
